Diary of Albert Wells at Passchendaele

Last week everyone did an amazing job with their "Why do we have poppies" homework.  One student Fynn went the extra mile and wrote a diary entry as well.  Read this awesome piece of writing.

August 4th, 1917
Today it started to rain and by the end of the day, the trenches were full of muddy water.  Boy, we had such a hard time trying to keep dry.  Up to our chests when we had to walk around the trenches.  The Germans kept up their artillery fire, it never seems to end and the sound gets right into you.  It's all you can hear, even when you try to sleep, which is near impossible in this hell hole.
My best mate Danny was wounded today, he was lucky - it was only a shrapnel wound.  Not like some of those poor buggers who get half their heads taken off, or the ones who get done by mustard gas.  The burns are horrific, I try not to think about it, and hope that if death does come to get me it will be bloody quick.
I often think of home and wonder if I will ever see it again.
